Training a Chihuahua

Training a Chihuahua should be a positive experience for yourself and your chihuahua. You as the owner and "pack leader" need to also be authoritative when training a Chihuahua. Chihuahuas are very intelligent and inquisitive little dogs. Chihuahuas are very fast learners and should be easy to train. Keep in mind that since Chihuahuas are so smart, they can get bored while training. The right approach can make training a Chihuahua of any kind easy.
Training a Chihuahua should be an upbeat and positive experience. Chihuahuas are stubborn by nature and do not respond well to punishment or yelling. Training a Chihuahua could take a setback if you yell at or punish your dog. Instead, let the Chihuahua know what to do and let it follow your lead. It may seem time consuming, but remember Chihuahuas learn quickly.

Training Chihuahuas should involve rewards for positive behavior. Training should be fun for both you and the Chihuahua. Chihuahuas respond very well to being rewarded with a treat, food or belly rub and they will work hard for it. Positive reinforcement is a very good tool with Chihuahuas. Training a Chihuahua should be on a regular schedule, but not too long for obedience training a Chihuahua. For potty training a Chihuahua, you must be constant. Make sure your Chihuahua knows you are trying to teach something and the dog will be more likely to respond.

When training a Chihuahua, please keep in mind they they are very small and fragile little dogs. Never choke a chihuahua with a leash, the Chihuahua tracheas can be damaged if the leash is pulled too violently. Use a harness when training a Chihuahua.
